IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS 8-26-18
Ignorance is NOT Bliss

Parents have a tendency to accuse their children, especially teens, of thinking they know everything (when, of course, we know that they do not). But how many of us adults could also be accused of thinking we know everything? And, of course, we do not either. We are never too old to learn something new. When I have a question about my computer or phone, who do I ask? My son. Face it, the younger generation is much more tech savvy than most of us older adults are. But as both individuals, and as a church, it is to our advantage to learn how to use this new technology. While it can definitely be misused, it can also be used to reach many more people with the Gospel than some more old-fashioned methods.
On the other hand, the 500 year old German proverb, “das Kind mit dem Bade ausschütten”, which translates to our modern idiom of “Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater”, reminds us that there are some things that should not be disposed of in our attempts stay up to date with the latest and greatest.
Many people look at the Bible as something that has outlived its usefulness. Nothing could be farther from the truth. We need God’s Word today more than ever! Young folks might wonder how this could be true, when after all, the prophets and apostles to whom God dictated the Bible knew nothing of our modern world. They didn’t have cars - they rode on donkeys! They didn’t have cell phones or computers. They didn’t have printers, or one of those old Xerox copiers, or a printing press, or even write on paper like we have today. They wrote on parchment scrolls! So how can the Bible possibly be relevant in today’s society, offer solutions to today’s problems, and provide hope in today’s world?
First of all, the God that wrote the words of the Bible through his chosen vessels, is ageless. He existed before time began and he will exist forever. He hasn’t changed one bit since eternity past and He will not change through all of eternity future. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” While our lives started at the moment of conception, Jesus has always been and always will be, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit since before creation, even though his incarnation in human form took place at a specific pre-determined point in history. And his return will also take place at a pre-determined time in what to us is still future. The Bible speaks of this future event, and like all of the Biblical prophecies that have already been fulfilled to the letter, this one will be as well. Because God is timeless, and exists in the past, present, and future simultaneously, he knows everything that has occurred, is occurring, and will occur. So when Jesus was riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, he knew there would be cars one day. He knew more about them then, than even Ed, or any other ‘car guy’, knows about them today! He already knew about Microsoft and its technology, even though it wouldn’t be developed until almost 2000 years later. And he already knows what it will be capable of 20 years from now.
And like God himself, his Word is also timeless. Just as in times past, when its truths have been ignored and defied, people suffered. And just as in times past, when its truths have been believed and followed, people have found hope despite their situations, they have discovered meaning in their lives, they have been able to love when they were hated, and they have been filled with joy even in a world bent on destruction.
Read the Bible with fresh eyes and an open mind. You will be amazed to discover passages that actually speak of things that the writers knew nothing about in their day, but God did. Read the prophecies of Daniel in the Old Testament, and John’s Revelation in the New Testament. They saw things that they could not explain, but that modern technology can. For example, there is a growing number of people that believe the image of the beast in Revelation 13, and even the beast itself, commonly known as The Antichrist, will be A.I. (Artificial Intelligence). (Check out: https://aiantichrist.blogspot.com/) And that the mark of the beast will be an implanted microchip. But regardless of how this plays out, God already knows, and he has given us his Word in which he assures those who love and trust him that the day is coming when, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21:4).
But some folks still don’t study the Bible because they think it doesn’t apply to today, and think there could not possibly be anything in that old book that is worth a second glance, even though nothing could be farther from the truth. And then there are folks that don’t study the Bible because they don’t want to believe in the one true God. Like Lucifer, they want to BE God, or at least declare collective humanity to be God, the highest life form. But as someone once said, truth is still truth, even if no one believes it; and a lie is still a lie, even if everyone believes it. And there are some who would rather ‘create God’, be it an idol out of stone in the past, or an AI robot whose intelligence surpasses that of humans in the future. But God created man – not the other way around.
Those who are truly wise, however, will indeed study the Bible, recognize it as the Word of God Almighty, maker and ruler of all that exists. And when they do, God will continually bless them with increased wisdom, heightened perception and awareness of his presence, and an amazing peace as they grow closer and closer to the one who loves them beyond all comprehension.
So dust off that Bible, and open your minds and hearts to all that God wants to share with you. Then encourage your children as well, to study the book that has no equal, because it is the only one written by God himself. Amen.

There are science books, history books, books about math.
You study in school, to prepare for life’s path.
But there is a book that is far greater still,
That can teach you more than those ever will.
It was written by God and not by a man.
It speaks of His love and of His great plan,
It reveals what has past and what is to come,
And tells of the marvelous things God has done.
